Lessons from Schumpeterian Growth Theory

چکیده
Formal models allow us to make verbal notions operational and confront them with data. Schumpeterian growth theory has “operationalized” Schumpeter’s notion of creative destruction -the process by which new innovations replace older technologies-, in two ways. First, it has developed models based on creative destruction that shed new light on several microeconomic aspects of the growth process: in particular on the role of competition, on firm dynamics and on cross-firm and cross-sector reallocation. Second, it has used rich micro data, in particular on entry, exit and firm size distribution to confront predictions that distinguish it from other growth theories. In both respects, Schumpeterian growth theory has helped bridge the gap between micro and macroeconomics. In this paper, we consider three aspects on which Schumpeterian growth theory delivers distinctive predictions: first, the relationship between growth and market power; second, the relationship between growth and firm dynamics; third, the relationship between growth and development.

Schumpeterian Growth Theory and the Dynamics of Income Inequality*
Recent growth theories' have been concerned mainly with the analysis of technical change and aggregate growth in economies with identical agents. This precludes any analysis of the relationship between growth and inequality. The purpose of this Walras-Bowley lecture is to argue that Schumpeterian Growth Theory (see Aghion-Howitt (1992, 1998)), in which growth is primarily driven by a sequence o...
متن کاملPeter Howitt on Schumpeterian Growth Theory
Over the past 15 years, much of my time has been spent developing a new generation of endogenous growth theory, together with Philippe Aghion. Our original contribution was Aghion and Howitt (1992). We have since generalized the simple model of that paper considerably and applied it to a variety of different questions. Most of what we have done is contained in our recent book (Aghion and Howitt...
متن کاملBridging the Gap between Schumpeterian Competition and Evolutionary Game Theory
This paper suggests that the analysis of Schumpeterian competitionwithin the Nelson--Winter model should be complemented with evolutionary game theory. This model and its limitations for density-dependent Schumpeterian strategies are presented in terms of the equations of evolutionary dynamics. Formulated as evolutionary games, the set of strategies can easily be extended from innovators and im...
متن کاملERP and Innovation in Schupeterian Market Dynamics
Organizations are under competitive pressure to innovate and at the same time efficiently execute their strategy, and have been implementing enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions to aid in the achievement of their goals. Sambamurthy, Bharadwaj, and Grover (2003) describe the capability of simultaneous innovation and efficient execution as agility, and they propose a model of information ...
متن کاملEndogenous Growth and Cross-Country Income Differences
A multi-country Schumpeterian growth model is constructed. Because of technology transfer, all R&D-performing countries converge to parallel growth paths. All other countries stagnate. Any parameter change that would have raised a country’s growth rate in standard Schumpeterian theory will permanently raise its productivity and per-capita income relative to other countries and raise the world g...
